In the 1960s, the UK government acknowledged the need for more new towns in the South East of England to alleviate housing congestion in London. Bletchley had already been utilized since the 1950s for overspill housing for several London boroughs. Further research conducted during the 1960s identified north Buckinghamshire, which included the existing towns of Bletchley, Stony Stratford, and Wolverton, as a potential site for a large new town. This town was informally referred to as the ‘New City’ in planning documents, and it was expected to be the largest yet, with a target population of 250,000 within a designated area of 21,883 acres (8,855.7 ha). The name ‘Milton Keynes’ was chosen based on an existing village situated on the site.
