The name ‘Milton Keynes’ was chosen as a revival of the name of one of the original historic villages situated in the designated area. This village is now commonly referred to as ‘Milton Keynes Village’ to distinguish it from the modern settlement. The de Cahaignes family held the manor from 1166 until the late 13th century, along with other manors across the country such as Ashton Keynes in Wiltshire, Somerford Keynes in Gloucestershire, and Horsted Keynes in West Sussex. The village was initially called Middeltone in the 11th century, and then later referred to as Middelton Kaynes or Caynes in the 13th century. It was known as Milton Keynes in the 15th century and as Milton alias Middelton Gaynes in the 17th century.
