The flood plains of the Great Ouse and its tributaries, including the Ouzel and various brooks, were designated as linear parks that run throughout Milton Keynes in order to protect them as important landscape and flood-management assets from the very beginning of the planning process.  The landscape architects realized that the Royal Parks model would not be appropriate or affordable for the scale of the project, and instead drew on their National Park experience to create a unique approach. They divided the Ouzel Valley into ‘strings, beads and settings’, which refer to well-maintained routes for walking, cycling or riding, activity areas such as sports centres and lakeside cafes, and self-managed land uses such as woods, riding paddocks, a golf course and a farm. With an area of 4,100 acres (1,650 ha), these linear parks are ten times larger than London’s Hyde Park and a third larger than Richmond Park.
