Due to the clay soils and flat terrain of Milton Keynes, flood control measures had to be incorporated into its design. To prevent flooding downstream, balancing lakes and managed flood plains are utilized to control floodwater and keep it from reaching the River Great Ouse. Loughton Brook, a small tributary that joins the Ouse at New Bradwell, has a relatively large catchment area that includes the hard surfaces of surrounding developments. To address this, the designers constructed Furzton Lake in the 1980s, covering an area of 70 acres (28 hectares). This lake serves as the first major balancing lake that the brook encounters. Additionally, the flood plain of the brook has been transformed into a linear park about 200 meters wide that runs west to east through the district. The lake and its surroundings are now a popular local recreational area.
