Bancroft Roman Villa is a Roman villa located in the Bancroft district of Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire. It is believed to have been built in the late 1st century and was subsequently expanded and improved upon in the following centuries.
The original structure was a winged-corridor house, but over time it was transformed into a grand building with mosaics and a formal garden. The villa’s principal rooms have been marked out in Bancroft Park, which is the current location of the ruins. The fish-pond has also been reconstructed, providing a glimpse into the villa’s original layout and features.
In the late 3rd century, the villa was expanded into a much larger house, featuring ornate decorations such as mosaics and wall paintings. The villa was likely occupied until the 5th century, when it was abandoned and eventually fell into disrepair.
Excavations of the site began in the 1930s and continued periodically until the 1970s. Today, the site is managed by Milton Keynes Council and is open to the public for viewing. One of the villa’s mosaics is on display in Central Milton Keynes Shopping Centre, allowing visitors to appreciate the artwork up close.
