Woughton on the Green, a Buckinghamshire village that is now part of Milton Keynes, was historically part of the parish of Woughton until March 2012. The village’s name, which is of Anglo-Saxon origin, means “Weoca’s farm” and has had various spellings throughout history. The suffix “On the Green” refers to the large grassy area in the village centre, which is the traditional village green.

During Queen Victoria’s coronation, Woughton on the Green was a significant village, thanks to the nearby Grand Union Canal and Wolverton Works, which served the West Coast Main Line. Its population peaked at 350 in 1850, but by 1960, it had declined to 150.

Today, the village is a suburb of Milton Keynes, but the residents still maintain their autonomy. The parochial church council continues to meet at the ecumenical parish church of St. Mary. Legend has it that Woughton on the Green was one of the bases of the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin, and his ghost, along with that of his mare Black Bess, have been occasionally reported in the area.
