The area of Knowlhill is mainly utilized for employment purposes and features a sizable parkland situated alongside the A5 highway. The majority of this area is a flood plain of the Shenley Brook, and includes the “Teardrop Lakes,” which are small balancing lakes.

During the late 1980s, Milton Keynes Development Corporation designated Knowlhill as the industrial part of the “Energy Park,” while the residential part was located across Watling Street in Shenley Lodge, which was home to the 1986 Energy World exhibition. The buildings in the area were required to adhere to higher energy efficiency standards than those typically in place at the time. By 1990, five exemplary offices, including the former headquarters of Royal Mail Parcelforce, had been built.

Although an unsuccessful attempt was made in 1990 to market the remaining area as a single large-scale development opportunity to fund a National Energy Centre through development gain, Knowlhill still maintains a strong association with sustainable energy. It is home to the main offices of organizations such as the National Energy Foundation, the Zero Carbon Hub, United Sustainable Energy Agency, and the National Home Energy Rating Scheme. Additionally, the area hosts the head office of the National House Building Council and a testing laboratory originally established by the Consumers’ Association but now owned by Intertek, as well as lawyers, graphic design companies, and warehousing.
