Loughton is a contemporary district in the civil parish of Loughton and Great Holm, situated in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England. The area, which is located about 1 mile from Central Milton Keynes, extends between Watling Street and the modern A5 road.
The name of the village is derived from Old English and refers to ‘Luhha’s estate’. According to the Domesday Book of 1086, the village was known as Lochintone. The oldest surviving structure in Loughton is All Saints Church, believed to have been constructed in the early 13th century, although many original features were removed during subsequent renovations.
While the original village has now been absorbed into the modern ‘grid square’ of Loughton, much of its character has been retained. The Church and remnants of the original parish of Great Loughton can be found in the area enclosed by School Lane and Church Lane, to the north-east of Bradwell Road.
